HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY
THE BELLS
Hear the sledges with the bells,
Silver Bells !
What a world of merriment their melody foretells !
How they tinkle, tinkle, tinkle ,
In the icy air of night !
While the stars, that oversprinkle
All the heavens, seem to twinkle
With a crystalline delight ;
Keeping time, time, time ,
In a sort of Runic rime ,

F I C T I O N ?
Nobody knows when fiction began.
Maybe the first story-teller was a prehistoric mother
trying to explain the world to her children.
Or perhaps it was a hunter telling about his adventures
around the camp fire.
WHO CAN TELL ?
What we do know, though, is that story-telling
was a purely oral activity until around 800 BC.
Myths and tales were passed down by word of mouth
and had to be memorized by each new generation of
story-tellers. This oral tradition only changed when ancient
people started to keep written records of certain stories.
The earliest surviving examples of these are the epics
of Homer, a blind professional story-teller, who lived
in the eighth century BC.

BLACK AND WHITE... ?
She'd some students who were 10-11 years old in her class,
and she always enjoyed teaching them, because they were all
clever and quick. They learned and thought about everything carefully.
One day she said to them:
"People in a lot of countries in Asia wear white clothes at funerals,
What colour does a women wear in this country when she marries, Mary?"
Mary answered, " White, Miss, because she's happy."
"That's good, Mary! You're quite right.
But then one of the boys in the class put his hand up.
"Yes, Dick ! Do you want to ask something?"
"Yes, will you explain, please Miss?
-- If so, why do men wear black in this country when they marry, Miss ?"

FEELINGS...
Many people who have to start the day early, find it
difficult to wake up properly.
For some of them the solution is very straightforward:
they drink two cups of coffee and the feelings of the
fatigue disappear. This is the effect of coffee, but also in
such drink as tea, cola and cocoa taken in reasonable amounts,
the stimulating chemical may help some people to work
more efficiently. However, excessive quantities of caffeine
can cause several irritating, unhealthy side effects.
Studies show, in fact, that more than two cups of coffee
a day can cause unpleasant symptoms such as

DISCOVERY (1)
Little Green Men?
These radio signals were heard first in 1967. They were coming
from a point in the SKY where there was no known star. They were coming very regularly too: once in just about a second. It was as if they were cotrolled by a clock.
The scientists who heard the signals did not tell anybody else. They were rather afraid to tell in case they frightened people. The signals were coming from a very small body – no bigger, perhaps, than the earth. Was that why no light could be seen from it? Or were the signals coming from a planet that belonged to some other star?
There was no end to the questions, but the scientists kept the discussion secret. ‘Perhaps there are intelligent beings out there’, they thought:
“—Little Green Men who are trying to send messages to other planets, OR TO US!” So the news was not given to the newspapers. Instead, the scientists studied the signals and searched for others like them…
Well, all that happens in 1967 and 1968. Since then scientists have learnt more about those strange, regular, radio signals. And they have told the story, of course. The signals do not come from a planet; they come from a new kind of star called a “pulsar”. About a hundred other pulsars have now been found, and most of them are very like the first one.
Pulsars are strong radio stars. They are the smallest but the heaviest stars we know at present. A handful of pulsar would weigh a few thousand tons. Their light – if they give much light – is too small for us to see. But we can be sure of this:
No little green men are living on them.

THE FIRST CALENDAR
Future historians will be in a unique position when they come
to record the history of our own times. They will hardlyknow which
facts to select from the great mass of evidencethat steadily accumulates.
What is more, they will not have to rely solely on the written word.
Films, gramophone records, and magnetic tapes will provide them
with a bewildering amount of information. They will be able, as it were,
to see and hear us in action. But the historian attempting to reconstruct
the diztant past is always faced with a difficult task. He has to deduce
what he can from the few scanty clues available. Even seemingly
insignificant remains, can shed interesting light on the history of early man.
Up to now, historians have assumed that calendars came into being
with the advent of agriculture, for then man was faced with a real need to
understand something about the seasons. Recent scientific evidence seems
to indicate that this assumption is incorrect.
Historians have long been puzzled by dots, lines and symbols which
have been engraved on walls, bones and the ivory tusks of mammoths.
The nomads who made these markings lived by hunting and fishing during
the last Ice Age which began about 35.000 B.C.and ended about 10.000 B.C.
By correlating markings made in various parts of the world, historians have
been able to read this difficult code. They have found that it is connected with
the passage of days and the phases of the moon.
It is, in fact, a primitive type of calendar. It has long been known that the hunting scenes depicted on walls, were not simply a form of artistic expression.
They had a definite meaning, for they were as near as early man could get to
writing. It is possible that there is a definite relation between these paintings and the markings that sometimes accompany them. It seems that man was making a real
effort to understand the seasons 20.000 years earlier than has been supposed.

BENEATH A PHRYGIAN SKY
A voice from down the ages So haunting in its song
The breeze it wrapped around me
Our battles they may find us No choice may ours to be
My mind was called across the years Of rages and of strife
We wondered where our God was In the face of so much pain
We travelled the wide oceans Heard many call your name
Some used your name for glory Some used it for their gain
Is it not our place to wonder As the sky does weep with tears
It is ours to hold the banner Is ours to hold it long
And as the warm wind carried Its song into the night
As the last star it shimmered
The moonlight it was dancing On the waves, out on the sea
A voice from down the ages So haunting in its song
